Workshops:
HAND APPLIQUE WORKSHOP I – Feathered Tulip Heart
This workshop explores four fundamental hand applique techniques including pre-basting, perfect circles, needle turning, and using bias strips. In class, these techniques will be compared to other popular applique methods. The session allows the student to practice these applique techniques.
The project is an appliqued tulip with a feathered heart quilting design suitable for beginning skill levels.
Tips for quilting and finishing hand applique work are discussed. This class provides an excellent chance to learn a new skill, or perfect your technique.
Length of workshop: Four hours
HAND APPLIQUE WORKSHOP II – Tulip Basket
Students in this intermediate hand applique workshop will explore several fundamental hand applique techniques including needle turning, making perfect circles, managing “points” and “valleys”, and using self-cut bias strips.
The class format allows students to practice these techniques and then apply them to making a 12" block pattern using Carolyn's prize-winning Tulip Basket design.
Tips for quilting and finishing hand applique work will also be discussed. This workshop offers an excellent opportunity to perfect your applique technique.
Length of workshop: Two sessions, three hours each session.
HAND APPLIQUE WORKSHOP III – Cloisonne
This Master Class is a logical next step for students who have taken the basic and intermediate hand applique workshops. In this class, Carolyn will address individual student concerns in hand applique techniques. For example: Do you still find the blindstitch frustrating? Are sharp corners still a problem? What is "reverse" applique? How can bulky seams be minimized? What can be done to counter the effects of shadowing?
Students are encouraged to bring their own in-progress project; but will also receive Carolyn's Cloisonne 12 inch block pattern. In addition to some group demonstrations prepared by Carolyn, this class is structured to allow students individual time with the instructor.
Length of workshop: One session, three hours.
THE CROWN JEWELS – Dimensional Patchwork Class
Construct a fascinating set of three-dimensional ornaments for holiday decorating. These ornaments can be easily assembled using basic quiltmaking techniques, and can be “dressed” up or down to suit your tastes and decor. Students will make a tetrahedron or hexahedron (cube) ornament in class. This could make a great mother/daughter project!
Length of workshop: One session, three hours.
HAND QUILTING CLINIC
Do you want to learn the hand quilting stitch or polish your quilting skills? Carolyn has the prescription! In this workshop, you will learn Carolyn’s prize winning technique for small even stitches while creating a hand quilted design in a small (12" to 14") block format. The workshop includes Carolyn’s “Flowering Dogwood” design plus suggestions for turning your block into a finished project.
Length of workshop: One session, three hours
Lectures:
A STITCH IN TIME...THE TIE THAT BINDS (45-60 min)
Quilting is a needlework technique that has been used the world over to create items that are both functional and beautiful. This slide presentation will explore the history, artistry, and cultural heritage of the American quilt.
This program also details various quilting techniques and styles used by contemporary quilters.
SO MANY FABRICS — SO LITTLE TIME (45-60 min)
Selecting fabrics and choosing colors is a process that often bewilders quilters. This slide presentation explores basic color theory and offers helpful hints for making fabric choices.
THE COMPANY QUILT (45-60 min)
This slide lecture explores several methods of hand applique plus tips for quilting and finishing appliquéd work.
In addition: Applique is discussed from an historical perspective. Hand applique is compared to other forms of machine and hand quilt work. Ideas for embellishing and combining applique with other forms of needlework are presented.
CONSERVING THE LEGACY (50-60 min)
This slide lecture explores the care, preservation, and restoration of family quilts. The presentation includes professional tips from textile conservators, and low-cost common sense techniques for enjoying and protecting quilts in a home setting.
THE MYSTIQUE OF THE AMERICAN PATCHWORK QUILT (50-60 min)
This slide lecture provides information to help one unlock some of the mysteries surrounding patchwork quilt design, and nurtures a deeper appreciation for what one sees when looking at an American patchwork quilt. The lecture includes sections on design, construction, block names and folklore, and maintenance and restoration techniques.
The program should be of interest to quilters in particular; but also to those who know quilters in their own families, and have quilts which they cherish.
